Vanessa Beecroft at Deitch
Kinda tight I missed this event. H$ & Renaissance T made it.
Long Island City is dark, industrial – a greyscale landscape of warehouses, workshops and loose gravel. From the street level, Long Island City does not connote beauty. It is not lyrical or delicate. It shows no signs of human emotion. But as I entered the Deitch Projects warehouse on Friday March 9th everything was daylight. Immediately confronted by the naked shapes of women coated in white, an esoteric beauty consumed the space.

Vanessa Beecroft is known for staging performances that explore identity politics through voyeuristic exchanges between Beecroft’s models and their audience.VB64 addressed this dialogue through sculpture. Florescent beams shining through the highest windows of the warehouse illuminated a rectangular configuration of women, some of them objects and some simply objectified. The latter were live models, soaked in white, as though they were cast as sculpture. The line between the inanimate and authentic human forms could only be traced by the blink of an eye or the slow and subtle change of position.
